THE
PROJECTION OF BEAUTY (1994)
After reading the book The Beauty Myth by Naomi Wolf I
was inspired to do my own visual research on the nature
of beauty in women. This was a two year photography project
that also involved interviewing relatives and friends.
I asked the following questions of each subject: Do you
feel beautiful? What is your ideal of beauty? Are love
and beauty related? How do you feel about aging? Do you
think often about how others see you? Is beauty an important
issue in your life?
I began the project with my grandmother. The project ended
with my friend Lisa and her two year old daughter.
As with many quests I learned what I already felt from
the beginning but could only discover through the process
of the journey. Beauty is intangible, it is a question
of degrees, it is culturally defined yet it has a tremendous
amount to do with your own state of mind and what you
project outwards.
